Bike Connectivity Challenge

As part of our Design Thinking course, we addressed the challenge of improving urban connectivity for cyclists in Berlin by focusing on car drivers. Our aim was to develop solutions that would incentivize car drivers to switch to bicycles, thereby reducing traffic congestion and promoting a more sustainable mode of transportation.
Process: We followed the Design Thinking framework, which allowed us to deeply understand the needs and behaviors of car drivers in Berlin:
Empathize:
• We conducted interviews with car drivers to understand their motivations, pain points, and preferences. Many drivers highlighted issues like traffic jams, parking difficulties, and the high cost of car ownership as major frustrations.
Define:
• We reframed the problem as: “How might we encourage car drivers in Berlin to switch to cycling by offering compelling alternatives and benefits?”
Ideate:
• Our team brainstormed a range of incentives, such as financial rewards for cycling, partnerships with local businesses offering discounts, and convenient bike-sharing schemes that could appeal to habitual car users.
Prototype:
• We developed a prototype for a mobile app that offers real-time traffic information, cycling routes, and exclusive rewards for users who choose biking over driving. The app also included personalized offers, such as discounts on bike accessories, and an integrated point system where users could earn rewards for cycling instead of driving.
Test:
• We tested the app with car drivers to assess its effectiveness in motivating a switch to bicycles. Feedback led us to enhance the app's interface, making it easier for users to track their progress and earn rewards for biking.
Key Insights:
Incentives for Switching: Car drivers are more likely to switch to cycling if offered tangible benefits, such as cost savings, convenience, and environmental impact.
Convenience and Information: Drivers need easy access to real-time information about safe and convenient cycling routes, parking for bikes, and bike-sharing availability.
Outcome: Our solution focused on making the transition from car to bike appealing by offering drivers practical incentives and a seamless digital experience. The app was well-received, with many drivers indicating that financial and convenience-related offers would make them reconsider their use of cars for daily commutes.
